I think Richard Callander (1/5) is drawing a long bow when he links problem gambling with the additional race meetings now available for TAB betting and on Sky’s racing channels.
I haven’t seen any detailed research on the topic (and neither, I would wager, has Richard), but logic suggests that people who have problems with betting on racing would tend to bet too much, not too often.
In other words, you can do all the study in the world, you can restrict yourself to the best quality racing, you can have one bet a fortnight — but if you bet more than you can afford, you’ve still got a problem. If you’re a "pokies"-type gambler chasing a loss, Trackside will do just as well as the trots from Toulouse.
The bottom line is that none of us has to bet on all these new meetings that are suddenly available. If no one does, they’ll soon disappear.
