Bouquet for big Nash

I would like to congratulate Nash Rawiller on winning the Sydney jockeys’ premiership.

From memory I think he is the first heavyweight (56kg-plus) rider to win either a Sydney or Melbourne premiership since Roy Higgins.

The mind boggles as to what the size of his winning margin would have been if he could ride at around 53kg.

Some of his contemporaries had in excess of 80 rides more than Nash.

Before critics point out that he rides for the Waterhouse stable one should keep in mind that this stable didn’t have as many runners as it has in recent years.

Furthermore, most jockeys worth their salt can win on odds-on chances. Nash would have to be one of very few riders in the elite group who accept rides on 20/1-plus chances and actually win on them.

Run For Levi ($71) and Black Piranha ($21) during the Brisbane carnival are just a couple of examples.

When I first began to follow Nash Rawiller 15 years ago my punting mates said: "You won’t win on the punt following the one jockey." I can happily say that they were wrong.
