Best in world, but not Melbourne

I was disgusted, disappointed and angered when I learned that Luke Nolen had been overlooked as the obvious selection for the prestigious Scobie Breasley Medal. To add insult to injury he was not even runner-up.

How could this have possibly happened after the season Luke has had? Six Group 1s, numerous other group placings and the Victorian jockey premiership in the bag.

And all of that was achieved after he came back from that horrific, near-fatal fall in Brisbane. The courage and determination Luke has shown to get to the top after that fall has been nothing short of magnificent.

How embarrassed the judges must have felt when Luke, after being invited to ride at Ascot in England, won one of the Shergar Cup series events and was awarded the ride of the day among a gathering of the world’s best riders.

On the world stage he is judged the best, yet in Victoria, his home, he is overlooked.

Something’s very wrong with the system when a decision like this is so out of whack with popular opinion.
