Bush bewdy

Recently I had the pleasure of attending my first country race day in the Geelong Cup and couldn’t agree more with many readers of this publication who continually discuss just how enjoyable a day at the country races is, whether it is a cup meeting or not.

Having previously only attended Melbourne Cup carnival races, I was impressed with just how relaxed and informal a day at the country races is. The atmosphere was certainly a lot more relaxed compared to what you would usually see at Flemington in November.

Alex Risk’s recent suggestion (16/10) in these very pages that (some) country race clubs be shut down would be doing an absolute disservice to regional Australia and would totally ruin the economic as well as social benefits that country towns gain from staging such annual cup meetings.

His suggestion that people travelling to and from country race meetings post a road safety risk is disgraceful.

There are risks taken on our roads all over Australia every day of every year.
