Letter of the Week

Seeing is believing

I’d like to take Richard Callander to task for his ridiculous comments (15/1).

"Punters want quality and that means everything from the big-name jockeys and trainers being involved in every race, to pre- and post-race interviews and comments …"

Well who died and made you king, Richie? How would you know what punters want?

My punting group definitely do not want more pre- and post-race interviews.

We would love a fair, uninterrupted view of the horses pre-race, like Hong Kong and Singapore provide for their punters.

Not Richard’s and Shane’s rude heads in front of a bookie’s board. Not a full screen of totes, results, breeding details or tips at the expense of a look at the horses.

What about a chance to see all of the runners, especially behind the barriers?

Then punters can make up their own minds based on what they see, not what some corporate bookie wants you to unload on.

If more people could see more of the horses and their condition and attitude behind the gates then blokes like Bobby Smith (8/1) wouldn’t have a case to argue.

Punters could see for themselves that the 2/1-on shot that gets beaten looked terrible, was flat-footed, sweaty, didn’t want to be there today and was beaten because of those factors, not because people like Bobby think it’s been "hooked".
