Trial, trial again

Here’s a neat solution to increase field sizes in Sydney — remove all the prizemoney!

On January 17, Randwick offered zero prizemoney and zero residual stud value, yet attracted 110 runners. However, on January 22, Rosehill offered a total of $740,000 and much more in residual stud values, yet attracted only 75 runners.

This is almost a weekly event in Sydney — no money and no residual stud value (barrier trials) attract 100-plus runners, but when nearly $1,000,000 is offered, and more in stud value (races), barely half as many run!

How many Sydney racehorse owners have profited from this merry-go-round of massively bloated yearling prices and fees, endless barrier trials, and few (race) starts by their potential champion (the trainer said it, so it must be true) that earns back a quarter what it cost?

Seriously, what percentage of Sydney owners profit from this lunacy?
