Better than good

How much significance should we put on the misplacement of a single word? When so-called racing experts and race callers get it wrong with their description of a horse, maybe we should just excuse them for being human.

I believe race caller Greg Miles made a significant mistake during his call of the Futurity last Saturday when he called More Joyous a "good" mare. Just two weeks earlier he called Typhoon Tracy a "great" mare during his call of the C.F. Orr.

It would be fair to say that neither horse has met and beaten many wonderful horses during her career, but they can only beat who is around them at the time.

Typhoon Tracy recently retired as a five-year-old, having had 20 starts for 11 wins including six at Group 1 level, while More Joyous is four years old and has had 16 starts for 12 wins including four at Group 1 level. Typhoon Tracy had four runs during the spring for four failures, while More Joyous has never had a run of outs like that.

All in all, however, I would say their performances are comparable. More Joyous is always at prohibitive odds, which restricts many of us punters betting on her, but there is no doubting her ability.

If she’s not at least an outstanding-to-great mare, then I have misread her performances or perhaps I need to visit my optometrist.

Mt Miles, perhaps we can go together.
