Pound foolish

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Black Caviar fan, but best racehorse in the world?

No wonder most racing fans’ eyes glaze over when international handicaps and classifications are mentioned.

How is it possible to compare sprinters and stayers accurately? How can Black Caviar be the best racehorse in the world when last Saturday was the first time she’s raced outside Melbourne and she’s never taken on any significant international competition?

Finally, why are these ratings invariably expressed in pounds, part of an outdated system of measurement only used in the UK and the USA?

Black Caviar is probably the best sprinter in the world and may be the best racehorse. But there’ll be no definitive evidence to back up that statement until she runs in Hong Kong this December.
