Good sport

I had the pleasure of attending the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday June 12. It was the first time I had attended and I had flown from Melbourne to do so. I must congratulate the BRC for an excellent program and a well run day.

Fortunately, I had secured "member for a day" tickets, which meant I had a terrific view of the mounting yard. After the running of the Stradbroke I saw an outstanding example of true sportsmanship. I observed the trainer of Black Piranha, Mr Con Karakatsanis, walk from one end of the mounting yard to the other to seek out and congratulate the trainer of the winning horse, Sincero, Mr Stephen Farley.

To do so was a credit to Mr Karakatsanis. His wonderful horse — who was chasing history in his bid to be the only horse ever to win the Stradbroke on three occasions — had just been beaten. He would have been disappointed. Yet he took the time to acknowledge the deserved winner. I say all the best to Mr Karakatsanis. Such grace under pressure is marvelous to observe. And such sportsmanship adds so much to the fabric of our sport.
