Going to the dogs
On Saturday night of July 9, I decided to have a few bets on the Darley July Cup at Newmarket (UK).
Eventually I discovered that Tabcorp had classified this meeting as "greyhounds" and was not offering a first four on the cup itself. (Surprisingly it did offer duets.)
Tabcorp bet on 20 gallops meetings on the day, of which 12 were classified as gallops, six as harness and two as greyhounds. This is a crazy situation for punters, which Tabcorp has for many years refused to remedy.
How long will it take Tabcorp to install a computer system that will enable it to:
1. Classify all gallops meetings as races,
2. Offer all bet types (especially first fours) on all meetings,
3. Bet on races with fields of more than 24 starters (allowing, importantly, emergencies in the Melbourne Cup)?
If Tabcorp obtains the new licence (which incredibly has been the hot rumour for months), it should be asked to bring its operation into the 21st century.
