Letter of the Week

Well done, Dyer

After a successful Darwin Cup carnival some congratulations are in order.

First, to the circulation/distribution section of Winning Post. When I purchased a copy of your paper, staff at the major newsagency in Darwin appeared surprised after scanning the barcode to find the cost was as advertised on the masthead ($4.50). Not like the interstate dailies, which retail at approximately 100 percent more than their recommended interstate price, more in some cases.

Thanks also for giving extended coverage of the Darwin carnival and stories on same.

Second, to Neil Dyer and all connected with his team of 10 horses in the Top End. It was a mammoth task to take his team 3700km and still have horses trained at home base and winning in Victoria.

Hawks Bay finally won the Darwin Cup for Neil at his third attempt, carrying the grandstand.

Neil was able to secure top jockey Steve Arnold, whose parents had the short-priced favourite in the cup.

A perfect ride from Steve saw Hawks Bay win in a comprehensive manner from Neil’s grey gelding Palmyra Boy, who has been running successfully in Darwin over the past four carnivals.

Over carnival time Neil trained nine winners and 12 minor placegetters.

Even on the return journey he had two winners and a third at Alice Springs on Saturday August 6.

According to local press reports in the Top End there is doubt about Neil returning. The Darwin Turf Club must use all in its power to be sure the Dyer team returns to Darwin.
