Good judges, not geniuses

I absolutely agree with the comment by Michael Barton (30/7) about so-called "genius" tipsters. Doesn’t the word ‘genius’, in layman’s terms, basically mean that the likelihood of a person getting something wrong or making a mistake is on a par with hell freezing over?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s obvious that these tipsters know a thing or two about horses, track conditions, trainers, jockeys etc. However, you’ll never convince of the barrier draw myth that they keep on harping on about.

Okay, yeah, they get stuff right but so do I and I’m no genius, just plain lucky. The fact that these tipsters spend most of their day down in the mounting yard has to be a bit of a bonus (e.g. Ron Dufficy, who has on occasion been known to change his mind after seeing horses parade).

Yes, I listen to their opinions on the radio every Saturday morning and I read the Winning Post and from there i make up my own mind. I definitely don’t treat anything as gospel but everyone has and is entitled to their own opinion and I respect that. So I will continue to listen to Deane Lester, Ron Dufficy, Gary Harley etc and I will definitely keep on buying Winning Post. But at the very end of the day, it is and always has been my decision on who I back and I do pretty well!

As for the comment by Alan Walker (6/8), comparing Deane Lester to Sir Donald Bradman — mate, come on! The Don was and still is an absolute legend. While Deano would probably be very flattered, thetwo are not comparable.

The Don’s average was a still unbeaten 99.94. Deane’s, respectfully, isn’t within a country mile.

I agree he’s a good judge, but not a genius or a candidate for a legendary status. Next you’ll be saying he can part the sea and walk on water!
