More than speed

Interesting to note Joel Marshall’s comments in his Caulfield Cup breeding wrap (15/10) about Southern Speed, which stated that the staying influence would need to be strong through Zabeel to compensate for the speed in her female line for her to be a chance in the Caulfield Cup.

I believe she has thrown to her sire (Southern Image), who only had eight starts and won close to $US2 million. We will never know if he could’ve won beyond 10 furlongs but more specifically I think she’s thrown to his female line. His dam is by Dixieland Band (damsire of Melbourne Cup winner Delta Blues) and granddam is by Pleasant Colony, who threw group winners over 2400m. Her type and colour is very much in the mould of her sire and his female line as well.
