Letter of the Week

Learn from Beirne

Winning Post correspondent Michael Barton (5/11) is guilty of "looking a gift horse in the mouth".

His letter casts aspersions against Dom Beirne’s credibility, competence and motivations. In doings so the letter writer outrageously uses pejorative words, such as "spiel", "claim", "pretence" and "tipster" in connection to Beirne.

He seems to object to Beirne’s "mild-mannered and humble public persona" and his word choices as though they were a cloak hiding something sinister. That is and always has been Dom Beirne’s nature.

Barton can’t believe Beirne’s computer program is based on objective data! I’ve never read anything so odd. What statistician/form student would dream of, to use Barton’s words, allowing any "subjective (data that) goes into the computer"?

In any event:

Firstly, Beirne’s work over this spring carnival has been quite brilliant. And over all previous carnivals he has covered.

Secondly, his erstwhile service Valuebet, in partnership with Sky, was an unqualified success, brought down by horse flu.

Thirdly, he is unique in the media in that he is a large and winning punter. I know. I have the scars. Is there another media person who actually has a bet?

Fourthly, he has an active consultancy business to large punting syndicates and racing stables.

As regards Beirne’s motivation, I believe he would have enjoyed a teaching/lecturing career. Aspiring form students are the winners from his largesse.

I think Barton should throw away his cynicism and reap the rewards by following and learning from Dom Beirne. And Barton should be grateful.
