Numbers and numbers
Off the back of the Melbourne Cup, Randwick had a rare day — a 26,000 crowd. Your columnist Richard Callander (5/11) hoped a huge crowd would farewell the following Saturday and that the new racing stand would be the key to Sydney racing moving forward. So with fresh confidence I turned to page 17 of Winning Post for the fields at Randwick on November 5.
Oops! Starters before scratchings starters — race 1: 7, race 2: 7, race 3: 8, race 4: 7, race 5: 9, race 6: 11, race 7: 10, race 8: 13.
Undeterred, I examined the Gosford fields. Again, before scratchings — race 1: 6, race 2: 5, race 3: 8. I stopped there.
God help racing in New South Wales because I doubt a new grandstand at Randwick will. So long as you need less than 10 fingers to count acceptances, its future will remain doubtful.
