New broom

So we have a new government in Queensland, and the new Deputy Premier will also be the shiny new Racing Minister. Perhaps now racing will receive ministerial attention deserving of the third-largest employer in the state.

In the face of the devastating defeat of their Labor mates, four senior executives of Racing Queensland came to work on the Monday after the election and followed their chairman, who had previously announced he was "walking the plank" into resignation.

In the same story the Courier Mail reported the new Racing Minister had ordered a full audit of Racing Queensland’s spending of industry funds. It is not clear if the minister’s announcement preceded the resignations, but both the announcement and the resignations appear to have occurred on the same day.

Perhaps this promising new broom will sweep up more astute stewarding of the bookmakers’ ring, and even some half-decent bookmakers’ percentages.
