Writing, Shane
Shane Templeton’s tribute to Vo Rogue (12/5) was a trip down a never-to-be-forgotten memory lane.
Shane’s story was pure racing journalism at its finest. He was the first pressman to discover this equine superstar.
Great comments by Lee Freedman, Robert Smerdon and the late Pat Burke.
I am sure you will allow me one "knock" — we Queenslanders thought he was a victim of a home-towner when he lost the St George Stakes on protest. Darby Munro would have thought likewise.
In the same edition, great story by Richo on Ajax — that man Munro again, riding to beat the champion.
Speaking of happy racing memories, I was at a Sunday meeting at Churchill Downs, Kentucky, on a cold autumn day in November 1984. Not a breath of wind, finest of light rain falling, smoke from the neighbouring houses drifting slowly from the chimneys and the PA playing My Old Kentucky Home. The ambience was superb.
I hope to celebrate my 80th birthday at the 2012 Melbourne Cup.
