Ludicrous argument

Apparently Richard Callander (26/5) doesn’t want photos and footage of jumps incidents shown on YouTube or in the media unless people who love jumps racing can control how and when the images are shown.

The argument that footballers also get hurt is ludicrous. They choose to be there. Likewise, cyclists choose to be cycling. Horses don’t choose to participate in jumps racing, and the sports-loving people of Victoria are smart enough to understand this essential difference.

Apparently horses are killed at pony clubs. Are they? The last enquiry I made to a pony association was met by an organiser who couldn’t remember a single instance of a pony being killed.

And as for animals killed at the pound, I think you’ll find that such numbers are released, and yes the community is rightly outraged. The images are not withheld, and nor should they be. Community funding largely keeps shelters able to rehome these discarded animals or put them to sleep.

You’re reaching for excuses, Mr Callander. You can’t control these images and the community hates them. Two steeplechasers fell heavily at Casterton last Sunday over the supposedly benign "live hedges". They’d have to be extremely sore at the very least.

You can’t control the images, and the excuses are gradually running out.
