Remembering Jack

The generosity of the Dow family in sponsoring the Jack Dow Memorial Hurdle is to be commended.

One of the turf’s most colourful characters is so well remembered that he needs no memorial.

His best horses needed no feed or groom — just a coin in teh carousel slot kept them on the go, to the delight of small children.

As a racing judge, Jack’s forté was jumping races, and his eye was well attuned in assessing the abilities of the leapers.

But even better than Jack with jumpers was his ally Ronnie Lindsay.

Ronnie used to have many holidays in his regular employment and during one of these he was called on to make the presentations to winning riders.

He was so good a judge that on one occasion it is said that as he had to leave the course early to catch a train, he actually presented the winning jock his prize before the race was run!
