Nothing wrong with winning
I certainly do not agree with everything that Richie Callender writes in the Winning Post. But he was spot on with his assessment of Chris Waller and some of the criticism he has copped when longer-priced runners of his beat those at shorter odds in the same race.
I have never understood such criticisms of trainers. I thought it was the basic obligation of every trainer who fields a horse that he or she will seek for that horse to win.
And that is all Mr Waller is doing. Mr Waller does not frame the markets. The punters do by the amount of money we invest on a horse. And horses — as far as I know — do not know their relative price in the betting ring.
Mr Waller’s performance last Saturday at Canterbury was outstanding. Four winners at various prices including Madam Nash at $12 and Said Com at $1.60 on the tote.
Mr Waller is an outstanding horse trainer who succeeds because of hard work and sound preparation. Add to that his humble nature and you have an individual who is a great credit to the training profession.
Those punters who complain about not getting on the longer priced horses of Mr Waller’s horses are simply talking through their pocket. My simple advice is this: back all of his runners in any race and spread your risk. You are more than likely to come out ahead.
