Slipping standards
It is with interest that I read (Winning Post 15/9) that it is proposed to increase the number of Group 1 races within Australia from 68 to 71 in the 2013/14 season.
No doubt breeders will be happy this decision, but the continuing increase may well devalue the concept of pattern racing in this country.
When this group format was introduced in 1979, Australia had some 42 Group 1 races, a figure which as noted has now risen to 68.
The rise has occurred despite the downgrading of the Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth Cups during the 2007 season.
A quick review of jurisdictions around the world highlights Australia’s position: Australia 71 (proposed), New Zealand 22, Great Britain 32, France 27, Ireland 12, Hong Kong 15, Singapore eight.
Surely some review must be undertaken to reflect the true standards of what a Group 1 race represents.
