Top spot
I had a terrific Cox Plate day (although not financially — that’s another story).
I decided for first time in my life to book a seat to avoid the meat market on the lawn and have to say that was 60 bucks well spent.
First of all, I have to thank the lovely Cecilia at Moonee Valley, who organised my ticket on the Wednesday but then rang me again the following day to advise a better seat had become available. Turns out this seat was elevated and right opposite the winning post! Now that is what I call good customer service!
Anyway, the chap I was sitting next to, named Geoff, said he was down from the Gold Coast and didn’t bet but just loved the atmosphere. I told him he was spot on with that.
I asked him if it was his first time at the Valley and he reaches for his racebook and turns to the page showing Cox Plate winners. Points to Dhaulagiri in 1961 and sure enough, it’s Geoff Lane the champion jockey!
Had a great day talking to this gentleman. Not an egotistical bone in his body.
Broke even on the punt but will always remember the experience.
