Letter of the Week

Seeking Cyril Moffatt

I have received a letter from England from family trying to locate what became of Cyril John Moffat — they contacted me as I am part of the Friends of the Brighton Cemetery and with his mother being buried there they were hoping that he might also be buried there. It was not to be. We have looked and looked but can’t find what became of him and was hoping that one of your many readers might know of him. The little that we know is:

• Cyril John Moffatt was born about 1911 in Newcastle, England, the son of Charles John Moffat and Mary Elizabeth Keeney — they arrived in Australia about 1919.

• He married at Prahran in 1932 to Mary Evelyn Flaherty. On the marriage certificate his occupation is given as "picture framer".

• From 1940 to ’57 he was licensed as a jockey — tracks he rode at include Geelong, Ballarat and Dunkeld. He was rode in NSW and SA.

• In 1949 and 1954 he was of 312 Argyle St, North Denison, Hobart (Tas).

• As of March 1963 he was contactable care of the Northern Rivers Racing Association at Tamworth (NSW).

We are hoping so very much to know what became of him. I can be contacted via the email address below or on (03) 9558 4248.
