Letter of the Week

Telling porkies?

In a recent edition (9/2) we had Michael J. Gamble question why "average" jockeys are getting paid so much for losing rides, (despite the fact that they travel all over the place, often have a limited career and their next ride could be their last), then (23/2) he most eloquently gave us an in-depth description of how four (yes, four!) local bank managers attended his local TAB to unload large sums on Black Caviar.

Not that the person working the counter at the TAB quizzed this quartet as to whether they were gambling with their own money. One of them even actually confided in Mr Gamble!

Given Mr Gamble seemed to be deeply concerned over this situation, perhaps he should have hotfooted it down to the local police station as he may have been a witness to what is an indictable offence that can carry a jail term as a penalty.

The fact that Mr Gamble knew all four gentlemen would have given any investigation a great head start.

But instead of doing this he went home and penned a letter to Winning Post. One of my old sergeants used to say, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."
