Incomparable

Comparing the records of Black Caviar and Tulloch to the end of the three-year-old seasons is a revealing exercise.

What Tulloch did in the spring of 1957 will never be repeated. He won the Warwick Stakes, the Rosehill Guineas, the AJC Derby, the Caulfield Guineas, the Caulfield Cup, the Victoria Derby, the C.B. Fisher Plate and the Queensland Derby.

Later that season he won the VRC St Leger, Rawson (Ranvet) Stakes, Chipping Norton Stakes, AJC St Leger, All-Aged Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Add that to his seven wins as a two-year-old (including the VRC and AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes, each worth more than the Cox Plate in those days) and he won 21 races at two and three over eight different distances.

His 14 wins at three came by a total of more than 84 lengths and his record Caulfield Cup win will remain his for all time.

Black Caviar won five races at two and three — a two-year-old handicap over 1000 metres and four races over 1200 metres, none of which was a Group 1.
