Worth a try

Innovation in racing is certain to bring out the naysayers, and they were certainly quick to appear when the MRC announced that it would move the main features of its carnival days to a last-race timeselot.

For starters, this is not Royal Ascot and we don’t run the big races at noon so we can get on with the serious business of the day — drinking G&Ts and hobnobbing in silly hats.

For goodness sake, the Caulfield Cup was race eight and now it’s race 10. It’s not as if the track is going to go from bowling green to war zone in the interim.

Anyone who attended one of the Black Caviar farewell meetings, where the climax was saved for last, will appreciate the MRC’s initiative in trying this idea.
