Letter of the Week

No parole

I am writing to register my disgust at all the media hype and publicity accorded to the very successful punting jockey (Damien Oliver).

He should have received 25 months — the period from placing the lucrative bet to finally owning up to it.

The controlling body allowed him two free Group 1s before finally bringing him to inquiry. By my calculations Oliver rode eight Group 1 winners between placing the bet and being suspended. Nice super if you can get away with it.

I notice with interest that Oliver received plenty of support from several trainers whose own records are far from pristine. Say no more.

I hope everyone takes notice of Lloyd Williams, who took Oliver off eventual Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon. All kudos to you, Mr Williams.

There are rules for the perceived upper echelon and rules for the rest.

Finally, I hope and pray the punting gods will have the final say. Hall of Famer? No way. Take it away.

Legend of racing? Never.

I feel good writing this letter.
