Big man, big heart

Richard Callander seems to be a popular whipping boy. After the latest slap from North Queensland (Your Say 3/8) I feel compelled to defend him.
The North Queensland correspondent played the “everyone has their own opinion” card, but that’s such a tired cliché.
I misjudged Richie when I first heard that booming voice on TVN. I thought he was a little too aggressive with his opinions and took aim with an off-target shot in More Say, but I have long regretted my initial negatives.
I knew his dad, Kenny, when I worked in Sydney. He is one of nature’s gentlemen and while Richie is his own man he is blessed with the same blood.
Richie is at ease with the silks but has genuine affection for the battler. Many of those train jumpers and his love and support for that side of the sport and his influence to that end has helped jumping to survive and begin to flourish.
Big Richie has a big heart. Think Four Tracks For Kids and those emotional and unforgettable interviews on TVN, especially those from Warrnambool.
Richie is a personality; racing needs them and he has become one of my favourite people in racing. I like him.
