Times have changed
Full endorsement of Dale Scott’s letter (21/9). I’m so glad that I am not the only one who disputes Peter Battistella’s pro-punter, anti-participant rants. When are you going to realise, Peter, that times have changed and that the bad old days of racing stables surviving on the punt are well and truly over. Racing is a professional industry where participants are entitled to earn a living wage.
On another topic, my fellow South Australian contributor Charles Silke, in his last letter (7/9) claimed that with the onset of spring horse racing would occupy the hearts and minds of sports followers.
Try telling that to the sporting editors of our print and electronic media in Adelaide, where it seems football season never ends. Post-grand final newspaper sports pages will be occupied by AFL trade week and later the national draft. If you want to follow the carnival I suggest you buy the Herald Sun or Daily Telegraph, if you want daily editorial as well as Winning Post’s excellent coverage.
We don’t fare any better on radio or free-to-air television either. The nightly TV sports reports are nothing more than football club news and the two radio shows on 5AA and Triple M are dominated by football people.
Thank God for Foxtel, Sky Racing and TVN.
