Nice Work
A couple of hours after the mystery bag that has become the Melbourne Cup (yeah, I know the favourite won, but I never back favourites) was a little non-TAB race at Stawell which happened to feature the Best Bet of the Year.
Anyone who saw Royal Work (at 80-1) box on to be beaten 2.4 in a handy BM70 at Geelong on October 23 and realised that he was scratched from the Mortlake Cup to take on three battlers in a lowly BM64 just had to be on the first bus to Stawell — but then I live only 15 minutes away and drove there for the one race.
Now, nine-year-olds can make a fool out of you at times, but this bloke — he’d won seven races in Tassie; the others altogether had only won seven — was jumping out of his skin. And the one bookie bet as much as 4-1!
Oh, happy days, and not a blueblood in sight!
