Finals fever

This month’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes produced an interesting finish. The stewards panel, in its wisdom, decided that even though Precedence moved in 2.5 metres on top of Sertorius the result would not have changed.

I can accept that decision but I was astounded to note that the report made no mention of Craig Williams moving to his left in the saddle and flapping his raised left elbow like a seagull scrambling for potato chips, restricting Ryan Maloney’s whip action.

It would appear to me that the stewards are now following the AFL model, where umpiring interpretations change markedly from the home-and-away games to the finals.
