Good average Cup
Why are media commentators claiming this year’s Melbourne Cup as the best ever? Is there an ulterior motive related to overseas entries?
This year’s three placegetters all ran last year.
The winner is obviously a good horse but his weight carried and winning time on a good-rated surface were only the average for the last 20 years.
Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner last season won races over 1400m. But in the Melbourne Cup he managed to beat home nine well qualified overseas stayers over 3200m. How? What is the quality of race they compete in to qualify?
On precedents, I doubt any Cup winner from overseas so far would have beaten Moonee Valley Cup winner Kingston Rule.
Racing media people should explain why, in their opinions, this year’s Cup was the best. For Gai Waterhouse it certainly was, but on result it was just another good Melbourne Cup.
