No bet if you can't win

The saga of only paying $1 back the place on many favourites with Tattsbet continues, as outlined by John Tutty (15/3).

It’s been that way in Queensland since the early 1980s, when a massive bet on a well performed pacer was returned at the then minimum dividend of $1.10.

The Queensland Government then legislated to allow money back if there was too much place money for any runner at thorougbred, trotting or greyhound meetings.

Since January 1 this year, a place bet of $1 has returned just the $1 on 18 occasions, predominantly on midweek meetings. In that same period, New South Wales and Victorian TABs have on the same runners been as high as $1.15 and $1.10.

Last yearTattsbet returned the $1 place dividend on more than 80 occasions.

It’s time Tattsbet administration sat down at its Albion headquarters and remedied this situation, which is an injustice to punters.

Surely a place return of even $1.05, $1.04 as in the other eastern states or, if there is a massive place bet, make it $1.02.

Headquarters will tell you that fixed odds are available. But with those, large place punters are able to take the price well before any race is run.

Many people are reluctant to bet in this manner.

I am aware that this anomaly has been raised before, but surely it’s time for action.
