Letter of the Week

Mitchell's Lord link

Some weeks ago a regular correspondent relived the deeds of the champion weight-for-age galloper Lord in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Mention was made of Bill Williamson’s association, but he never won a race on the thoroughbred, who conquered greats of the period including Tulloch, Aquanita, Dhaulagiri, Sir Blink and Prince Darius to name a few.

Memories were evoked with the recent passing aged 85 of Kevin Mitchell, who educated Lord and rode him to three wins from his five starts as a two-year-old.

Kevin then honoured a contract to ride in Singapore for five years and Geoff Lane took over, piloting Lord to 17 of his 28 victories.

Other jockeys to win on Lord were Brian Wilson (three), Brian Pulbrook, Jan Wakker, Brian Gilders, Bill Pyers and Rod Dawkins.

Owned by W.R. Kemball, Lord was trained by Ken Hilton.

Lord and Kevin Mitchell, revered names in racing.
