Drone on
This Hawk Eye technology embraced by Victorian racing obviously gives stewards a helping hand in their job.
But how about going another step towards what could be the best innovation in racing since the photo finish and barrier stalls?
I reckon it would be very possible and plausible to develop a drone (pilotless aircraft) with camera capable of covering the field from above.
This view, which we see at every major carnival from a helicopter, is superb. There is no place to hide from this view in running and an overhead drone would be an unprecedented tool for stewards, punters and form students.
Best example of the overhead view’s value was watching Craig Williams’s ride on Pinker Pinker to win the Cox Plate.
