Letter of the Week

Mad as heck

As a VRC member I am sick and tired of being told how I have to dress to enter the members reserve all year, then finding people flouting the rules with impunity during Melbourne Cup week.
I was led to believe that the dress code would be enforced on Derby day, but there were women in shorts and with bare midriffs allowed in the members enclosure, the Nursery and the Birdcage. Cup day was the same.
On Oaks day women wearing rubber thongs or with bare feet were told to leave the members enclosure — which they did, only to re-enter by another gate. Same on the final day.
I stood on the first floor on Saturday talking to some friends when a security person told me I could not stand and talk where I was — the next race was 30 minutes away.
It’s about time the VRC kept the gate people in the same spots all year around to ensure some consiustency.
At least at Royal Ascot they have the nerve to refuse people entry. Even the Queen’s granddaughter had to follow the rules.
