Too colty? Red card!
In race one for two-year-olds at Moonee Valley on Friday January 30, there were two colts and seven fillies.
One colt, Equinova, arrived in the mounting yard with his mind solely focused on displaying his masculine prowess, trumpeting and performing and slapping his belly. You wouldn’t have backed him in a fit.
Around at the start, he charged at Parcel, the pre-race favourite, knocking her over and unseating the rider. She then took off and did two circuits of the course, before being caught and naturally scratched — through no fault of her own.
Equinova was allowed to start, and unsurprisingly ran down the track.
In such circumstances, natural justice would suggest that stewards should be able to act and scratch the transgressor as well. This would also have protected any unknowing off-track punters who did their money cold on the colt.
