Chaos Central
As I endured the coverage of Golden Slipper day on Sky Thoroughbred Central, I found myself humming the words to that old Joni Mitchell song: “You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.”
The truth is, I probably knew what we had with TVN, but I took it for granted and never seriously contemplated that we’d lose it. How I missed it on Saturday.
During the week, Sky Racing had spruiked a “new broadcasting era with Sky Throughbred Central” and had promised cutting-edge camera angles, whiz-bang graphics and an “expert” line-up of talent. I was genuinely excited.
What we got was bizarre inside shots that made it difficult to follow the races, graphics tucked away in the corner that prompted me to book an eye test this week, and a cast of thousands stumbling to get a word in (and when they did, it was often just repeating what the previous “expert” had said).
I can only assume that the production manager was on leave and they handed the reins to the work-experience kid for the day.
If this is what the new broadcasting era looks like, then give me Channel 7’s coverage any day.
