Pronounced difficulties
Have noted that Victoria’s race-callers are having much fun with the pronunciation of the Mick Kent-trained Ahhhh.
Apart from the fact that there is no dictionary definition for Ahhhh — it is not a word or a name but a sound, which leaves me baffled as to how it can be bestowed upon a horse — three separate race callers have pronounced the horse’s “name” three different ways in three starts.
Surely, for the avoidance of doubt, one needs to ring the owner, ask him/her how he wants it to be pronounced, and have the issue put to bed.
Take last start for example, when the enthusiastic race-caller on duty let out a yawn, like he was about to fall asleep, each time it was time to identify the horse in running. The winning owners are now going to have to listen to that each time they want to relive their horse’s win on DVD.
There is a time for having fun, and a time for doing your job.
