Building the buzz

The NSW government must be delighted with its investment in The Championships — $10 million of taxpayers’ money to pull 11,000 people on the first day and 23,000 on the second.
Talk about bang for your buck.
Rather than give the money to John Messara next year, perhaps Mike Baird should just find 25,000 punnas and pay them $20 per head per day to turn up.
This would have the effect of increasing attendance over the two days by 16,000 — and all for the same low, low price to the long-suffering taxpayers of the Premier State.
They might get even more if they threw open the gates, attracting the curious as well as those being paid to attend.
The ATC would also be a winner, as it could save money on ludicrous marketing campaigns and gate staff.
