Nobody's perfect
While Paul Connors (13/6 and 20/6) is correct to point out the many failings of the previous Racing Queensland administration under Bob Bentley, it is misleading to suggest that all was sweetness and light under the recently sacked board.
Connors suggests that the RQ board was collateral damage from the live-baiting scandal in the greyhound industry, but the thoroughbred division had issues of its own.
Most obviously, Racing Queensland is reportedly on track to lose $11 million in the current financial year and $21 millon in FY 2016. It’s all very well to boost prizemoney, please stakeholders and save country clubs, but at some point you have to start breaking even.
Then there’s the code’s showpiece venue, Eagle Farm, which was originally scheduled to reopen in April this year. They’re now hoping to return to the Farm in February next year — and that’s no certainty either.
So perhaps not quite the well oiled machine Paul describes.
