Jump to it
Now that jumps racing is booming, I’d like to see southern NSW introduce jumping.
The Southern District Racing Association has many clubs close enough to the border to attract Victorian horses while they build their local ranks.
Congratulations to the Murrumbidgee Turf Club (Wagga), which has started programming long staying flat races, with 2500m common place.
Its 3800m Riverina Cup understandably attracted small fields in its first two editions, as it takes time to build up a stable of stayers.
Last year’s big winner, Archibar, has since progressed to hurdles, and looks a star.
Logically (to my eye) the next step for the MTC would be jumps racing.
While I’m on logic and southern NSW, I’d amalgamate twin-town race clubs Albury with Wodonga, and Echuca with Moama. It seems a huge duplication of costs having a racetrack on each side of the river.
I won’t hold my breath though. With different state governments and administrations involved, the logical often seems impossible.
