Letter of the Week

Take the plunge

I was a little surprised the editor did not offer some explanation to Kevin Parkinson (3/10) as to why Winning Post does not publish a midweek edition.
For what it’s worth, it does seem obvious to me that such a venture would be quite unviable To begin with, the market midweek would be at most one third of that of a weekend. You only have to look at betting turnover figures to realise the truth of that statement.
On the eastern seaboard there is already a midweek Journal available, and I have heard unconfirmed rumors that it is struggling. So there is unlikely to be room for more.
Kevin claims to be computer illiterate, and therefore denies himself access to online services.
Kevin, may I offer some advice. I doubt there was anyone more computer-illiterate and negative than myself. No way was I going to depart from my practices of more than 60 years with a form guide, a pen, sheets of paper and at times a calculator.
However, it became obvious that I was better off investing from home — initially on the phone, and taking advantage of the many deals being offered by the corporates, which were unheard of on course.
I was still short on information, particularly on-course fluctuations, and after talking with some of my punting pals who had also moved from the betting ring to the home office or study, I began to realise my negativity to computers was akin to the insistence of some people on continuing to drive a horse and buggy when motor vehicles were introduced.
My friends had also made me aware that Winning Post presents an excellent daily form guide of all race meetings in Australia on its website free of charge.
So what I did, with the help and advice of some of my pals and grandkids, was find a brilliant technician who would not only help me in the purchase of a suitable computer, but taught me only that which I needed to know to carry out my punting online.
He didn’t confuse or complicate by going into all other aspects of computers, and I soon found it easy, fun and far cheaper and more profitable to do my punting online from home.
If and when I found myself in trouble, I made a phone call to my technician, who showed me how to grant him access to my computer remotely.
Wherever he was, with his laptop or even his mobile phone, he could sort me out in a few minutes.
It was not long before I became confident navigating my racing websites. With that confidence came competence, and it was easy to move on to emails, letter writing, scanning, copying and more.
But you must have that patient technician, who accepts the deal that you are a “dill” in need of help and tuition.
It will all fall into place, mate. Just keep remembering those folks who wouldn’t grant the motor car as any more that a passing fad.
