Ripper read

I’ve just finished reading John Adams’s book Board Odds I Lay — The Story of Victorian Bookmakers.
For a mad punter of nearly 50 years who worked as a bookies’ clerk for a number of years, John’s book made fantastic reading. The research he must have put into it is amazing.
I’ve mentioned before in Winning Post that when they mention “big” bets on Saturday races as being $1000 and $2000, they are joking. The bookies and especially the punters of today (the ones we may hear about) have nothing on those of yesteryear. The likes of Eric Connolly, Michael Pitt, Wolf Fink and of course Kerry Packer to name a few, put the current crop to shame.
Plus the sad demise of bookies over the years is a blow to the sport. There were hundreds fielding years ago, now you are sometimes lucky to get one.
Anyway it was a great read and I hope John puts out more.
