Letter of the Week

Well picked

I congratulate the owners of the Ciaron Maher-trained two-year-old colt Havildar, who ran a close third last Saturday at Caulfield.
What a thoughtfully and cleverly named horse he is.
His sire, Sepoy, carries the name by which Indian soldiers were referred to during the days of the English occupation of India, and a Havildar was a non-commissioned officer — a sergeant — in that army.
The name derives from the Persian “hawaldar”, meaning “one in charge”.
Truly a fine name for any steed.
