I think the Melbourne Cup field would be enhanced if the VRC exempted from the ballot the winners of Mooney Valley, Geelong and Bendigo Cups.
These races are good Melbourne Cup guides already. With ballot exemption as a lure they would be much stronger.
More chances for the in-form horse to secure a cup start in October would help both locals and overseas raiders.
The ballot-exempt Bart Cummings is very early and the Lexus very late, with only the Caulfield Cup in between, meaning most cup runners have qualified on last season’s form.
Some don’t really come up, yet they hold out a late-blooming in-form stayer who can’t get in. Three more chances would help.
