Letter of the Week

Easy listening

Saturday morning is form study time — reading the Winning Post and then, at 11am, turning the radio on to radio station SEN, listening to the evergreen race caller and entrepreneur Bryan Martin.
Bryan’s interviews are superb listening.  Last Saturday’s talk with trainer Robbie Laing was very family-orientated, covering Robbie’s mum, dad, wife Rachael and kids, especially daughter Gracie, who looks set for a great singing career.
It seems Robbie must have been pretty good at (Aussie rules) football also as he played quite a few games for Mordialloc in the VFA.
I was amazed at Robbie’s capacity to remember his and his father’s horses — their names, the races they won, who they beat and the margins they won by, not to mention their breeding, a subject on which obviously he is an expert.
Robbie is obviously a very down-to-earth person and I wish him and his family all the best of for the future. Even my wife, no big racing fan, commented on how she enjoyed the interview.
On listening to Bryan of a Saturday morning I’m amazed at how much he knows about his interviewee. He must do a lot of homework as he rattles off question after question.
I believe this week he will interview legendary race caller John Russell, one of nature’s gentlemen.
I hope Bryan will ask JR about his contract as a race caller with 3UZ.  The staunch Blues man had written into the document that if Carlton played in the grand final in any year he would stand down for the day.
