Sporting chance
Where are the haters, naysayers and narks after Winx’s latest magnificent win?
Any suggestion that the mighty mare is a cotton-wool champion was surely scotched when Chris Waller elected to run her on a deteriorating heavy 9.
Admittedly he hasn’t got a lifetime unbeaten record to protect, as Peter Moody did with Black Caviar, but it was still a gutsy and sporting move to give her rivals the chance to beat her on a bog.
Not that I believe Black Caviar was a protected species either. Let’s not forget the time she won the C.F. Orr over 1400 metres and backed up a week later in the Lightning over 1000 metres.
Chris Waller’s statement that he wouldn’t have wanted to read the papers the next day if he’d scratched the mare was telling.
Congratulations to him and Winx’s connections on their handling of this magnificent ambassador for racing.
