It’s no surprise to see Sydney effectively pushing its spring carnival back by two weeks.
Why should it have to bump up against the AFL and NRL finals every year — especially considering its autumn carnival also faces competition from those sports and others?
The solution for Victoria is as plain as the nose on Darren Weir’s face — move the Melbourne carnival back a fortnight as well.
This very idea was floated earlier in the season but was howled down by traditionalists wedded to the “first Tuesday” and quickly shelved.
Do it, and I predict the whingeing will last two years at most.
