Weary of Weiry?
Darren Weir should have been excluded from Racing Victoria’s $600,000 country series, which culminates on Oaks day.
He’s a great trainer, an absolute phenomenon, but if you are winning more races in the city than any other trainer in the nation, you are not in essence a country trainer.
Restricted races happen every day of the week. It would have been so simple to make this series a truly rural initiative by restricting it to country stables who have enjoyed fewer than 20 city race wins in a season, or have fewer than 40 horses on their books.
How galling would it be to a country trainer and a horse’s owners to make it into a $200,000 final, with a rare chance to win a carnival race at Flemington, only to be pipped by someone who trains 400 winners a year.
I’d be saying, for God’s sake, give us a break!
